Tourism2030 - 5 New: Destination Management- TO BE EDITED

The Role of Tourism Stakeholders

The challenge for destination developers and administrators is to start by improving sustainability knowledge and skills, reducing green-wash and rhetoric, and collaborating with a common multi- stakeholder vision that offers shared transformational goals to each set of stakeholders that help deliver the SDGs. There should be in place at destination level a solid sustainability policy and programme delivery platform for multi-sector implementation of the global green economy. Priority must be given to protect natural cultural heritage and promote socially responsible, economically viable tourism destinations in both the short and long term.

Governments

Role of Governments include the provision of infrastructure, the development of tourist attractions and experiences, manegment of events and and monitor the complex system of tourism. Governments play an esstential role in planning , policy making and development of a destination.

NGOs, networks, partnerships

NGOs play a vital role in destination mangement such as taking all the stakeholders interests into account, cooperating with local govenrment in order to realize the plans and policies made for a destination, actively helping for implementation of community based project and etc.

Research, education, consultancy

It is a must for DMOs to gain knowledge about the competitive environment, opportunities and threats, and trends that will change the future competitive landscape. Researchers, educational bodies and consultants are the main contributors to this purpose.

Destinations

Effective destination management - based on well resourced strategies and action plans, implemented through governance structures and inclusive of all stakeholders - is critical for achieving sustainable tourism in destinations.

Businesses

Local businesses need to innovate with the changes in the market and adapt themselves to more complex activity, more sophisticated products and a more independent market approach. Some of them took over the role of incoming tour operators, specializing in a specifi c destination and creating products for unknown customers.

Travellers

Adapting a proper management approch in a destination can facilitate greenwash free branding, marketing, and also communication with travelers to meet their preferences and needs.

PURPOSE

The 4th biennial Advances in Destination Management Forum (ADM) invites researchers and practitioners to share and discuss contributions to advance insight and impact in destination management and marketing.

TOPICS

ADM 2018 invites contributions in six different streams:

Destinations as storyscapes

What is next in destination strategy?

The future of destination management organizations (“Bricolage at the fringes”)

Measurement of tourist behavior and data integration for tourism purposes

Governance, regulation, and leadership for destination networks

Open advances (“Don’t let structure hold you back. Show us your new ideas!”)

As a topical focus, we are organizing a special panel session on:

«Tourist data and decisions: Introducing new measurement techniques, data collection options, and challenges»
with industry representatives and scholars working on new solutions in this domain.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

The forum provides an excellent opportunity

to develop an understanding of the state-of-the-art in destination management research and practice,

to test novel ideas in front of an interdisciplinary audience interested/versed in destination management

with very limited administrative effort for submission and while you keep your copyrights at all times,

to challenge destination management and marketing’s cherished assumptions based on practical experience or theoretical considerations, and

to help identify and shape the research agenda in this domain published after the ADM forum as the St. Gallen Consensus on Destination Management.

In the spirit of past forums, we continue our work to bridge the gap between parallel developments in separate disciplinary tracks to connect different bodies of knowledge on destination management and marketing.

The forum benefits from a mix of multifaceted perspectives contributed by researchers from different disciplines as well as practitioners with manifold backgrounds. This mix of perspectives drives stimulating, invigorating discussions of new insights and novel practices in tourism industry and beyond.

CONTRIBUTION GUIDELINES

Contributions of the two target groups vary in aim and form. Please refer to the submission details in the attached PDF or conference website for further detail.

Academic contributions (short papers)

Scholars are invited to submit empirical and conceptual research or viewpoints that push the boundaries of existing knowledge and have the potential to inspire insightful and controversial discussions. Their contributions take the form of short papers that should comprise approximately 5-8 pages.

Practitioner contributions (presentation outlines)

Practitioners are invited to provide state-of-the-art practical insights or domain-relevant challenges in the form of PPT-presentations that hold potential to inspire insightful and controversial discussions.

The Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) represents the interests of higher education provides of bachelor degree level and above in tourism, hospitality and events education in Australia and New Zealand. For more information visit the CAUTHE website

It is 25 years since a small group of tourism and hospitality educators (THE) gathered at the University of Newcastle for a conference that was the precursor to the annual CAUTHE conferences. It would have been impossible to imagine back in the early 1990s how industrial cities, such as Newcastle, might adapt to a post-industrial world let alone establish services economies to attract tourists. Yet Newcastle, like many regional cities globally, have successfully negotiated this transition by getting smart about processes of renewal and creating quality services for both residents and visitors on the foundation of a knowledge economy.

CAUTHE 2018 will provide a forum to explore how the rapid development of easily accessible information is transforming the ways by which visitors and tourists behave. It will also provide a forum for considering how tourism, hospitality and events might capitalise on opportunities that emerge in a world where smart technologies produce large data sets that can provide detailed insights into tourist mobilities and behaviours.

CAUTHE 2018 will consider changes that are occurring in the way future generations of tourism, hospitality and event professionals are developing their knowledge and expertise. CAUTHE 2018 will provide opportunities to share knowledge about how contemporary tourism, hospitality and event students learn, the various technologies that assist or hinder the learning process, and the role of educators in a context where information is only one click away.

At CAUTHE 2018 we acknowledge that the process of building knowledge and becoming smart about tourism, hospitality and events can generate a series of paradoxes, ironies, and juxtapositions. Not only does new knowledge challenge conventions in tourism contexts but alternative ways of knowing can disrupt how tourism, hospitality and events are developed and experienced.

Potential topics that capture these juxtaposing dualities include:

Rurality and urbanism in regional tourism destination development

The co-existence of extractive industries and sustainable tourism in destinations

Regulating the tourism sharing economy while deregulating small and medium tourism enterprises to encourage enterprise

Outbound and inbound global mobility of youth – are they equal?

Culturally sustainable Indigenous tourism in a world that uses a primarily global north perspective

Volunteer tourism and the rise of a narcissistic generation

Promoting sustainable tourism services to international tourists who need to travel long distances on high carbon emitting forms of transport

A predominantly male senior academy with a largely female junior academy

Slow tourism in an increasingly time pressured global workforce

The possibility that smart technologies lead to a lack of deep thinking in tourists about sustainability?

Dispassionate tourism scholarship with compassionate outcomes

Continuity with change in tourism, hospitality and events

These topics will be explored through keynote presentations, expert panel sessions, concurrent paper presentations, poster presentations, and a series of workshops.

The creative tourism is proving to be a very interesting tourism product as it caters to all categories of person (alone or groups, youth, adults or seniors, families or groups of friends). The principle of creative tourism is to meet the expectations of tourists who want an authentic experience, combining the discovery of a territory to meet with its inhabitants. Thus participation in a creative workshop allows tourists to discover the country visited a more original and pregnant way. In this creative tourism is characterized by interactions between tourists and the visited territory, emotional, social and participatory.

In 2010 appeared a creative tourism network "The Creative Tourism Network" which main objective is to share best practices and to invite new destinations to support and structure their creative tourism. These members offer different activities. This is the case for example of the "Creative Tourism Santa Fe" offering jewelery courses, paintings, ceramics, photography, cooking, artist studios visits.

On the consumer behavior of the plan, some involved more actively with creative practices, exchange knowledge and are also involved in their creation, with creative content. These new consumers bring valuable skills to the design of tourist offers. Thus tourism policies must now bring together tour operators, tourists and territories with a view to value creation, and the creative tourismparticipates to that. The design of a tourism image and / or a territorial brand can as part of the formulation of innovative tourist offer, associate creative activities to destinations. For this the use of new technologies and digital media play a major role in the dissemination of creative content of tourist offers. Finally, if the current trend is to the segmentation of tourism market with offers and new services including creative tourism and other new forms of tourism (wine tourism, language tourism, slow tourism, conference tourism) , they must leave room for sustainable development, and thus be part of a sustainable tourism.

Researchers are invited to submit empirical research, methodological and conceptual documents that focus on topics related to the implementation of creative tourism related to sustainable development.

Potential topics to be addressed include the following:

The aim of this paper is to highlight the usefulness of big data analytics to support smart destinations by studying the online image of Barcelona (a leading smart city and tourist destination) as transmitted via social media through the analysis of more than 100,000 relevant travel blogs and online travel reviews (OTRs) written in English by tourists who have visited the city in the last 10 years. The proposed methodology used in this paper facilitates the massive gathering, cleaning up, and analysis of tourism-related user-generated content (UGC) from the most suitable sources, and helps to define the transmitted image of the city through collecting and processing large volumes of digital data. It is also used to extract business intelligence (BI) from OTRs concerning visits to Barcelona’s main landmark/attraction, La Sagrada Familia. The findings of this massive content analysis of information from a trustworthy source, UGC data, is very useful in appling BI to destination management, both in order to develop and assess marketing strategies and to improve branding and positioning policies among tourism and marketing organizations. It reinforces the ability of cities such as Barcelona to develop a smart city and destination concept, as well as a strategy for themselves.

The question of how tourist destination image is generated is an issue of significant interest in the tourism management field. The present work analyzes the effect of the design of a tourist destination website, and the effect of the tourist's processing of information, on the destination image that the tourist creates. In order to achieve this objective, an experimental design was carried out, in which a destination website was specially created in order to manipulate message type and information-overload. The results demonstrate that destination image is more positive when emotional messages are employed on the website and when the individual does not experience overload. The work also demonstrates the moderating role of involvement, in the effect of the factors manipulated in the study (message type and information-overload) on tourist destination image. The conclusions reached in this study hold some interesting implications for practitioners working in tourist destination management.
