In partnership with the European Environment Agency EEA, UN WTO and UNEP the ECOTRANS organisation since 2004 is administrating the "DestiNet Sustainable Tourism Information Portal": as UN CSD type II “Partnership for Sustainable development” DestiNet serves as public information sharing platform for all tourism stakeholders and networks from local to global level who are working for making tourism more sustainable.

ECOCAMPING (1999-2001)

The “Bodenseestiftung” (project leader: Marion Hammerl) as lead organisation, together with ACTA and other partners, developed an environmental Management Certificate according to the European EMAS regulation for camping sites around Lake Constance (DE, AT, CH) and Lake Maggiore (IT). ECOTRANS as partner of the European project ECOCAMPING (1999 – 2001, supported by LIFE ENVIRONMENT) provided international know how and experiences, especially from existing Ecolabels. In 2001/2002 the project was be enlarged to other German regions. Meanwhile ECOCAMPING is a leading European network of environmentally friendly camping sites in various European countries.

European Ecolabel for Tourist Accommodation – development (2001-2002)

Four phases: European set of environmental indicators for destinations, common standard for existing Ecolabels, co-operation with tour operators, image and consumers campaign. Publication of "The VISIT initiative" as online version and as pdf in English, German and Italian language .Co-founding of the VISIT Association, registered in Amsterdam, 2004.

Worldwide study for WTO, Madrid, world-wide evaluation study on certification systems, eco-labels, awards and prizes, environmental management systems, codes of conduct, etc., similarities and differences among voluntary initiatives, factors that make them effective and successful in terms of sustainable tourism development, research findings. The research was realised in collaboration with Ocean Blue Foundation (an environmental charitable organisation based in Canada), the results were published by WTO as print version and as CD ROM with detailed description of the initiatives.
