Project Management for Sustainable Development (PM4SD®) forms the basis of a new methodology for designing and managing successful tourism projects.

PM4SD aims to become the internationally recognised methodology to use tourism as a force for social, economic and cultural change, supporting the delivery of successful projects in a way that ensures benefits for everyone: visitors, local communities and stakeholders alike.

The first training courses in PM4SD were launched in 2013, and certificates have been awarded at PM4SD foundation level to almost 100 professionals from 15 countries representing different types of organisations, such as national and local governments, international organisations, academies, tour operators and consultancy companies.

The Foundation for European Sustainable Tourism (FEST) is in charge of maintaining and disseminating the methodology worldwide. You can visit the website here to find out information related to events, training courses and accredited training organisations.

TEMS - The EPOMM Modal Split Tool

EPOMM considers modal split to be the best indicator for the mobility policy in a city. However, these data are often hard to find. Therefore, EPOMM aims to provide comparable modal split data of all European cities.

With TEMS, you can easily compare similar sized cities and cities with similar modal split. Where available, TEMS also provides modal split development timelines per city.

Any state and any city can contribute by uploading city data and national data. The 11 EPOMM member states made an extra effort to provide as complete data as possible and as many survey background data as possible.

The new Multi-Annual Financial Framework for 2014-2020 brings simplification at various levels: merger of EU funding programmes for easier access to information, harmonisation of application procedures, etc.

The "Guide on EU funding for the tourism sector (2014-2020)" gathers and digests information about the diverse thematic programmes for private and public entities. It focuses on practical questions:

type of tourism-related actions eligible for funding;
type and level of funding;
who can apply and
how to apply.

It also points at concrete examples of what has been funded under previous programmes, as a possible source of inspiration.

Service-oriented, sustainable, local food value chain – A case study

Many developing countries depend on tourism as their main engine for economic develop- ment, but sustainability is often a concern. In the absence of inter-sectorial linkages between tourism and other industrial sectors, opportunities for trickledown benefits to host communities are stymied. For decades, researchers have been contending with issues related to strengthening agriculture and tourism linkages as a strategy to maximize eco- nomic linkages. This service-oriented approach to the local food supply chain is posited as a new model in which agriculture and hotel linkages can be advanced. We collected data about local food hotel supply through interviews with key stakeholders. The findings from our exemplary case study confirm that strengthening inter-sectorial linkages have benefits for stakeholders. This case study suggests that there are opportunities for tourism policies that foster local food linkages with high-end accommodation properties as a strategy to spread the economic spin off from tourism and also to encourage youth involvement in sustainable tourism development.

ETHICAL TRAVEL DECISIONS Travel Agents and Human Rights

Abstract: Thispaperexplorestheethicsofsellingtourismproductsfordestinationsthathave known major human rights issues. The study uses the moral intensity framework to analyze the ethical decisionmaking of New Zealand travel agents. Qualitative interviews reveal support for all aspects of the framework. In particular, agents’ judgements are strongly influenced by their perceptions of how their decisions impact upon their clients. In contrast, uncertainty surrounds the probability and magnitude of consequences of their decisions for destination communities. Strong social, cultural, legal, and economic links between the agent and the more proximate stakeholders mean that ethical decisions commonly favor these stakeholders. EMAS Implementation Tools

EMAS is an instrument designed by the European Union to help organisations improve their environmental performance. The EMAS Helpdesk, operating on behalf of the European Commission, developed tools to help organisations implement EMAS, and is currently having them tested by organisations. The tools are available on the EMAS website here, and are free of access to any company, EMAS-registered or not.

You can use them to:
-     Identify your activities and their environmental impacts;
-     Calculate and keep track of key environmental indicators;
-     Define responsibilities in your organisation if you were to implement EMAS.

The tools are free to use and conceived to save time for organisations willing to collect and analyse environmental data. Feel free to test them, share them with your network if you think they are useful, and send us any feedback to make them better fit your needs!
