Europe's tourism industry is still booming and try to find a way between the rising problem of overtourism and a sustainable, more responsible way of tourism.

The Algarve for instant, has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. Small fisher villages transformed into big beach town resorts, which offer accomadations for millions of tourist every year. In contrast to the very well developed sea side, the rural areas further inland suffer from a constant migration to the coast or other regions in Portugal and abroad.

Proactivetur and other providers in this area try to revive this regions throw hikes, workshops, cooperatives and other projects.

2. WHY
Reason for taking the good practice action	The Algarve became one of the top summer destinations in Europe. In only a few decades small fisher villages and one of the poorest regions of western Europe transformed into a popular beach resort for many rest or party seeking travellers. In contrast to these mass tourism Proativetur provides a alternative in the vast backlands of the region, which are threatend by migration and unemployment.
Issues and challenge	In contrast to destinations in central Europe the concept of Ecotourism and certification is not that widely neither in Portugal or the Algarve. Nevertheless in the recent years Cooperatives like the QRER began to establish a network of responsible tourism companys and other key people in the sector to start a developing process, where Proactivetur takes a important role in.
3. HOW
Methods /steps / tools used (to develop the good practice)	João Ministro as the leader of the firm is deeply rooted in the region and establish also a wide network during the years. In his former years the worked on the Via algarviana, in regional NGO, in conservation areas and as nature guide. Throw this network he helped to contruct the QRER Cooperative and his own project tasa, which works with "criativo turismo" and tries to develop old handcrafts of the region.
4. RESULT
Specific/measurable results, benefits	Due the contruction of the via Algarviana and the rota vicentina, the Algarve expand their tourism season and become more attractive to new target groups. In the recent years more and more tourist found their way in the hinterland of the algarve. Remote villages got more attractive and dozens of new responsible organisations and projects started in this region. Tourist benefit from a remoteness and still accessability of this region.

5. REFLECTION
Lessons learned
Challenges met	The Algarve, similiar to destinations like Mallorca or Andalucia, face a constant growth of mass tourism and all the problems, which come with it. The challenge however is to develop alternatives, participate with the local community and secure social and enviormental sustainability.
Critical success factors	Small tour operatours like Proactivetur cannot transform a hole region by their own. They need partners and also work with big travel agencies to also reach people, which would normally not thinking about sustainabilty.
