Finalist, Destination Stewardship Award
Tourism development in the country of Bhutan, located in the Eastern Himalayas, is based upon a sustainable development approach that is part of its innovative Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy. With national ecotourism development guidelines already established and more than 60% of its forests and mountains under protected status, Bhutan focuses on high-value, low-impact tourism. By encouraging the development of community-based tourism enterprises to benefit Bhutanese, providing capacity building training and support, and ensuring that visitors contribute to tourism development through strictly enforced fees and requiring that international tour operators partner with local Bhutanese ground operators, Bhutan is ensuring tourism delivers important benefits for the local people, while also protecting cultural and natural heritage.
