Lesvos' history dates back to 546 BC when the Persians ruled the island. The third largest island in Greece is blessed with stunning beaches that give way to majestic landscapes and spectacular natural attractions. The Gulf of Kalloni on the bottom of Mount Olympus is a magnificent refuge area that draws birdwatchers from around the globe. Environmental and eco-friendly programs have been implemented to protect reminders of past ancient civilizations that are scattered all around the island. As a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) Lesvos won the "2009 Tourism and protected areas award".
