The national park was declared in 1997 as the
first of its kind in all of Hungary. Popular programmes are the legendary Blue Tour, a hiking event with a 120 years tradition, or the Wine Route of Koszeg that gives an
understanding of the producing of the
country's unique wines, also typical specialties like honey cakes, goat cheese
and apple products. Eco-friendly practices in
agriculture, construction and forestry have been at the forefront of
local municipalities for years, also measures
to renovate the springs in environmentally friendly manners have been
implemented with help coming from volunteers. There are also yearly
cleaning movements that rid the park of waste deposits and other
undesirables. Winner of the "2009 Tourism and protected area award" as a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN).
