Hortobágy or puszta is part of Europe’s largest uninterrupted natural grassland and is a unique example of the harmonious coexistence of people and nature through the considerate use of the land. 200 families still perpetuate the traditional way of life. The surrounding Hortobágy national park is Hungary’s largest protected area. Winner of the “2008 European Tourist Destination of Excellence in Intangible Heritage” Award (project European Destinations of Excellence EDEN).
