Carlingford as an originally Viking settlement is having more historical buildings than any town of the same size in the whole of Ireland. The closeness to the Mourne Mountains and the Irish Sea makes the area attractive as a place for outdoor activities on land and sea. The peninsula comes alive with a number of exciting festivals, which celebrate the heritage of this vibrant and historic area. Winner of the “2008 European Tourist Destination of Excellence in Intangible Heritage” Award (project European Destinations of Excellence EDEN).
