Not many of us would have been following the latest development of the BRICS story of international trade supply chain linking as we ride the post-COVID business-better-than-usual Pheonix rise of a vaccination free travel and tourism sector. Travel Green BRICS was a feature of this week’s Moscow-based BRICS International Municipal Forum coordination event bringing together 5000 delegates eager to build new supply chains with new partners round the globe.

I was pleased to see a former Tourism 2030 DestiNet Drivers Test contributor to this platform Mr Victor Mutanga leading the Zimbabwe delegation as the country’s ambassador to the BRICS network. Victor is also a former UNESCO Olympic Truce Peace Ambassador who has worked with me as part of the IIPT work of Mr Louis Amore who many of you will remember has worked on former Olympic Truce’s with us. You can see his contribution to the Portal at the moment bringing together SDG 16 with SDG12 in Africa as BRICS ambassador with our common work to mainstream sustainability and peace through tourism at the Olympic Games.

He is also building Travel Green Zimbabwe with us as BRICS ambassador, and you can link up with him to build any Travel Green BRICS country supply chains in Africa and the other BRICs countries that may be of interest to you.

Please read his full article covering multi-sector trade development at the Convention. I have high-lighted here the following extract for tourism stakeholders with an interest in tourism in Africa:

‘Enhancing Cultural and Tourism Potential Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty offer tremendous potential for tourism, a sector that can generate significant revenue and create jobs. The forum allowed Zimbabwe to engage with cultural institutions and explore partnerships that could promote the country as a prime tourist destination. These efforts are expected to lead to increased international interest in Zimbabwe’s cultural and tourism assets, driving economic activity in local communities and contributing to national development. The relationships established at the forum could result in collaborations that further develop the tourism industry and preserve Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage.’

Gordon Sillence ICT Director Tourism 2030

Only sustainable tourism promotes a culture of peace!

On the occasion of today's World Tourism Day, Naturefriends International (NFI) emphasises its call for a sustainable transformation of tourism as part of the shift towards a culture of peace and cooperation.

"Tourism and Peace" is the motto of today's World Tourism Day, which is celebrated every year on 27 September and this time focuses on the peace-building potential of tourism. But can tourism as it is currently practised actually realise this potential? Isn’t it first necessary to transform tourism, as Naturefriends and many other NGOs have been demanding for many years? And above all, isn't peace needed to make tourism possible at all?

Resolution "Naturefriends for Peace"

The 10th Annual Conference of the Naturefriends International (NFI) in Heerlen, the Netherlands on 14th of September 2024 passed their Resolution, saying:

„The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine launched in 2022 and Israel's military response to the Hamas terrorist attack in October 2023 led to numerous public calls for peace. All calls were unanimous in their objective: the weapons should be silenced, and civilian suffering ended. However, there were and still are differing opinions how these goals should be achieved and who bears responsibility for the devasting conflicts. Economic boycott of Russia, support for Ukraine, protection of the Palestinian civil population versus total extinction of the Hamas movement? Each of these aspects divides the peace movement and thus prevents a common all-encompassing position.“

Five key measures to support

At the end of the resolution "Naturefriends demand:

the immediate stop of the military and other warlike action on all sides;

the immediate start of negotiations under a neutral facilitating institution like for example the United Nations, which is accepted by the conflicting parties;

the support of refugees, war resisters, and the civil population suffering from military and warlike action;

the support of peace activists worldwide;

the signing and ratification of the “Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons” by all governments.“

More on:

Resolution "Naturefriends for Peace": https://www.nf-int.org/sites/default/files/presse/aussendungen/2024-09/Resolution%20Naturefriends%20for%20Peace.pdf
